DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2020” and the “Time Series on Health Statistics 1979-2020”
DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2020”, a compilation of data concerning Health in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on several domains: Health staff, Hospitals, Pharmacies, Vaccination, Parturitions and Causes of Death. At the same time, DREM updates the time series on Health Statistics 1979-2020 with the 2020 data on vaccination and causes of death.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Health staff – The number of doctors, nurses and pharmacists increased
- The number of physicians registered in the Guild on December 31st of 2020 was 1,202, up by 6.5% when compared to the previous year (1.129). The number of physicians per 1,000 inhabitants maintained an upward trend, rising from 4.4 in 2019 to 4.7 in 2020.
- In 2020, 2,383 nurses were registered in the Guild (2,335 in 2019), which corresponded to 9.4 nurses per 1,000 habitants (9.2 in 2019).
- The number of pharmacists in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 240, which means 9.5 pharmacists per 10,000 habitants.
Health establishments
Hospitals - Attendances at emergency services decreased by 26.1%
- In 2020, there were ten hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, three of them official and the remaining seven private.
- In the year of reference, the average number of used hospital beds stood at 2,018, representing a ratio of 7.9 beds per 1,000 inhabitants (7.4 in 2020).
- At the end of 2020, the staff employed in hospitals comprised 4,707 health professionals. These included 512 doctors, 1,416 nurses, 268 diagnostic and therapeutic technicians and 1,441 auxiliary staff.
- There were 269.3 thousand medical consultations in the external consultation unit of hospitals, a lower figure than in 2019 (315.3 thousand consultations).
- 5 thousand persons stayed overnight as inpatients (26.8 thousand in 2019), corresponding to 555.7 thousand days of hospitalisation.
- 38 surgeries (except small surgeries) per day were performed in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (27 in public hospitals).
- In the reference year, 92.5 thousand persons were attended in the emergency departments, down by 26.1% compared to 2019 (125.2 thousand).
Pharmacies – The number of pharmacies remained the same
- In 2020, there were 65 pharmacies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and 1 medicine depot (the same as in the previous year). There were 26 pharmacies per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020, the same ratio as in the previous year.
Vaccination - Total inoculations increased by 10.6%
- According to the data provided by the Institute of Health Administration and Social Affairs (IA Saúde), 117,079 vaccines were administered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2020, meaning an increase of 10.6% compared to 2019 (105,864 inoculations). A total of 85 COVID-19 vaccines were inoculated.
- The number of vaccines administered under the Regional Immunisation Programme was 57,129, down by 0.7% compared to 2019 (57 539). Outside this Programme, the number of administered vaccines stood at 59,950, having grown by 24.1% compared to the previous year ( 48,325).
- In the recommended scheme, in 2020, vaccination coverage in AMR in persons who have turned 1 year of age ranged between 99.2% and 99.4%, having increased in all vaccines compared to 2019.
Deliveries by mothers - Births decreased by 1.1%
- 1,842 deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were carried out in 2020, representing a 1.1% decrease over 2019 (1,862 deliveries). Twenty-three of that total were deliveries of twins.
- In the year of reference, 77.3% of the deliveries were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years (1,423 deliveries).
Causes of death - Mortality due to circulatory system diseases and Malignant neoplasms increased; mortality due to respiratory system diseases dropped
- In 2020, there were 2,713 deaths of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to a 1.3% increase from 2019 (2,679 deaths).
- The diseases of the circulatory system remained the main cause of death in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2020, generating 827 deaths, i.e. 30.5% of the 2,713 deaths (29.7% in 2019). Compared to the previous year, deaths caused by these diseases increased by 3.8%.
- Malignant neoplasms were the second most important death cause in the Region in 2020, contributing to 662 deaths, 24.4% of the total (23.2% in 2019). The number of deaths due to malignant neoplasms went up by 6.4% compared to the prior year.
- The diseases of the respiratory system were the third most important cause of death in the Region, generating 419 deaths, i.e. 15.4% of the total (16.6% in the previous year). Compared to the preceding year, the deaths due to this cause dropped by 5.6%. Of that overall number of deaths, 230 were due to pneumonia (259 in 2019).
- COVID-19 disease caused 15 deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in 2020. The mortality rate for this disease was 5.9 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, being the lowest rate among the 7 NUTS2 regions (69.2 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants at the national level).
