Banana sales decreased by 3.0% compared to the previous year 

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA), in 2024, 24.5 thousand tonnes of bananas produced in Madeira were commercialised, a reduction of 745.4 tonnes compared to 2023, that is, -3.0 %. Nevertheless, the volume of bananas commercialised in 2024 constitutes the second-highest figure since 1999, surpassed only by the record levels achieved in 2023. 

In 2024, only class I grew compared to the previous year (+21.5%), with the Extra (-5.0%) and II (-17.2%) classes registering falls compared to 2023. It should be noted that the extra class of bananas totalled 20.3 thousand tonnes, representing 83.0% of the total sold (84.7% in the previous year).

Of this total banana, 84.4% was shipped, mainly to mainland Portugal (85.7% in 2023), with the remaining 15.6% sold on the regional market (14.3% in the previous year).

September was the month in 2024 in which the highest volume of banana sales was recorded (3.1 thousand tonnes) and December was the month in which the lowest volume of this product was recorded (1.2 thousand tonnes).

February was the month with the highest annual increase (+44.0%). On the other hand, June was the month in 2024 that recorded the largest year-on-year drop in this indicator (-26.8%).
