Banana sales decreased by 14.4% compared with the previous year
According to data provided by the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA), in 2025, a total of 20.9 thousand tonnes of bananas produced in Madeira were sold, representing a reduction of 3 520.2 tonnes compared with 2024, i.e. a decrease of 14.4%.
In 2025, only class II bananas recorded growth compared with the previous year (+17.6%), while Extra (-17.1%) and Class I (-8.0%) bananas registered declines. It should be noted that Extra-class bananas amounted to around 16.8 thousand tonnes, accounting for 80.3% of total bananas sold (83.0% in the previous year).
Of the total volume of bananas sold, 81.4% was dispatched, mainly to Mainland Portugal (84.4% in 2024), while the remaining 18.6% was sold on the regional market (15.6% in the previous year).
July was the month of 2025 in which the highest volume of bananas was sold (2.5 thousand tonnes), while December recorded the lowest volume of this product (992.4 tonnes).
July was also the month with the highest year-on-year increase (+12.9%). Conversely, October proved to be the month of 2025 with the sharpest year-on-year decline in this indicator (-29.2%). In addition to October, significant year-on-year decreases were also observed in March, April, May, August, September and December, mainly due to unfavourable weather conditions that adversely affected banana production.
