Aviculture products, slaughtered livestock and value of landed catch increased compared to the previous year, while the quantity of fish landed decreased
According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), egg production stood at 30.7 million units in 2022, a 33.1% increase compared to the prior year. The same trend was noted in poultry meat which amounted to 3.3 thousand tonnes, up by 2.4% over 2021.
In turn, in the year under review, the slaughtered livestock totalled 1,023.8 tonnes, up by 6.2% over the previous year. This increase was caused by a growth registered in the slaughter of cattle (+7.1%) since the slaughter of pigs recorded a drop (-6.6%). It should be noted that the species that accounted the most to the overall total was the bovine breed (93.8% of the total).
As for fisheries, data provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries (DRP) show that the year 2022 was characterized by a 9.2% decrease in the volume of landed catch, with the annual total amounting to 4.7 thousand tonnes. The value of the first sale rose by 10.5%, with the annual overall amounting to around 15.6 million euros.
The decrease in the quantity of fish landed is mainly explained by a decline in catches of tuna and similar (-31.3%), although the catches of chub mackerel and other species also decreased by 6.3% and 12.4%, respectively. The black scabbardfish recorded an increase of 20.6% in catches compared to the previous year.
Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2022, totalling 2.3 thousand tonnes (48.0% of the total catch landed), followed by tuna and similar, which reached a total of 1.9 thousand tonnes (40,9%). In terms of first sale revenue, black scabbardfish recorded a significant increase of 34.8% compared to 2021, totalling 7.5 million euros, while tuna and similar products decreased by 7.8%, to a value of 6 .2 million euros.
In 2022, the average price of fish determined at the first sale (excluding fish unloaded for self-consumption in these calculations) grew by 22.3% to 3.37 euros (2.75 euros in 2021), with black scabbardfish reaching 3.39 euros(3.02 euros in 2021) and tuna and similar, 3.26 euros (2.43 euros in 2021).
Record figures for aquaculture production
In 2022, the production of sea bream stood at 1,597.4 tonnes, up by 2.0%. In turn, sales topped 8.4 million euros, rising by 9.2% over the previous year. For both indicators, 2022 recorded an all-time high, surpassing the previous record figures of 2021.
Breaking down by market, it should be highlighted that sales for mainland Portugal and the Azores accounted for 87.4% of the sales value, and the regional market only 12.4%.
