Poultry meats slaughter, egg production and value of landed catch increased compared to the previous year, while the quantity of fish landed and livestock slaughtered decreased

According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), egg production stood at 32.7 million units in 2023, a 6.4% increase compared to the prior year. The same trend was noted in poultry meat which amounted to 3.5 thousand tonnes, up by 6.9% over 2022.

In turn, in the year under review, the slaughtered livestock totalled 959.0 tonnes, drop by 6.3% over the previous year. This decrease was caused by a down registered in the slaughter of cattle (-6.4%) and in the slaughter of pigs (-6.0%). It should be noted that the species that accounted the most to the overall total was the bovine breed (93.7% of the total).

As for fisheries, data provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries (DRP) show that the year 2023 was characterized by a 0.2% decrease in the volume of landed catch, with the annual total amounting to 4.7 thousand tonnes. The value of the first sale rose by 17.1%, with the annual overall amounting to around 18.2 million euros.

The evolution in quantities was mainly the result of the decrease recorded in catches of black scabbardfish (-6.2%), although the quantities of mackerel and other species also decreased, -0.3% and -5.1%, respectively. Catches of tuna and similar products increased by 6.7% compared to the previous year.

Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2023, totaling 2,118.7 tonnes (45.1% of the total landed catch), followed by tuna and the like, which reached a total of 2,056.8 tonnes (43.7%). In terms of revenue in the first sale, black scabbardfish recorded a significant increase of 33.2% compared to 2022, totaling 9.9 million euros, while tuna and similar products increased to a lesser extent, +1.5%, to a value of 6.3 million euros.

In 2023, the average price of fish determined at the first sale (excluding fish unloaded for self-consumption in these calculations) grew by 16.7% to 3.93 euros (3.37 euros in 2022), with black scabbardfish reaching 4.79 euros(3.39 euros in 2022) and tuna and similar, 3.10 euros (3.26 euros in 2022).

Aquaculture production decreased

In 2023, the production of sea bream stood at 1,395.0 tonnes, down by 12.7% compared to 2022 . In turn, sales amounted to 7.9 million euros, a decrease of 5.9%, over the previous year.

Breaking down by market, it should be highlighted that sales for mainland Portugal and the Azores accounted for 87.8% of the sales value, and the regional market only 12.1%.
