Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2022
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today statistical information on Agriculture and Fisheries for the year 2022. Along with the tables available on its website, an annual publication is also made available, which includes an analysis report. The following highlights are extracted from the report.
In agriculture: Production of sugar cane and banana increased, while potato output decreased
- Among temporary crops, potatoes continue to have the highest production volume, reaching 21,849 tonnes, despite a 15.8% decrease compared to 2021. Sugarcane is the second most significant crop in this group, with a production of 10,048 tons, showing an increase of 845 tons (+9.2%) compared to 2021.
- In terms of permanent crops, the production of bananas reached 23,892 tonnes, showing a growth of 12.6% compared to the previous year. Grapes from the vitis vinifera variety had a production of 4,032 tonnes, indicating a 1.3% increase compared to 2021. It is worth mentioning that extra class bananas accounted for 81.4% of the total processed by GESBA. Regarding grapes, sourced from the Instituto do Vinho, Bordado e Artesanato da Madeira (IVBAM, I.P.), it is important to note that 76.5% of the total production consisted of Tinta Negra Mole grapes, which is a slight increase from 74.3% in 2021.
In animal production: Production of eggs and slaughtered livestock increased
- In the industrial poultry sector, egg production reached 30.7 million units, indicating a growth of 33.1% over the previous year. An identical trend was registered in poultry meat production, whose volume was around 3.3 thousand tonnes, which reached approximately 3.3 thousand tonnes, representing a 2.4% increase compared to 2021.
- The total livestock slaughtered and approved for consumption by the population in 2022, was 1,023.8 tonnes (net stripped), up by 6.2% over the previous year. This growth is attributed to the rise in bovine slaughter, which increased by 7.1%. On the other hand, pig slaughter experienced a decrease of 6.6%. The bovine breed was the most slaughtered species in 2022, accounting for 93.8% of the total.
In fishing: Despite a drop in landed catch volume, first sale receipts increased
- The total amount of fish unloaded in the ports of the Region decreased by 9.2% compared to 2021, standing at 4.7 thousand tonnes. However, the value of the first sale receipts rose by 10.5%, amounting to around 15.6 million euros.
- The drop in the landed catch volume was mainly due to the decrease in tuna and similar catches (-31.3%), as well as a decline in blue-jack mackerel catches (-6.3%). However, there was a significant increase of 20.6% in the catches of black scabbardfish compared to the previous year.
- Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2022, accounting for a total of 2.3 thousand tonnes (48.0% of the total catch landed), followed by tuna and similar species, which reached a total of 1.9 thousand tonnes (40.9%). In terms of first sale revenue, black scabbardfish recorded a significant increase of 34.8% compared to 2021, totalling 7.5 million euros, while the revenue from tuna and similar products decreased by 7.8% to a value of 6.2 million euros.
- In 2022, the production of sea bream reached 1,597.4 tonnes, showing a growth of 2.0%. Sales of sea bream reached a record high of 8.4 million euros, representing a 9.2% increase compared to the previous year. These figures surpass the previous record set in 2021.
Analysing the market breakdown, sales to mainland Portugal and the Azores accounted for 87.4% of the total sales value, while the regional market represented only 12.4%.
In the Economic Accounts for Agriculture and Exports of agricultural products: Production in the agricultural sector grew in 2021
- According to provisional data from the Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture, the agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) reached 100.3 million euros in 2021. This represents a nominal increase of 4.2% compared to 2020.
- Approximately 19.3 thousand tonnes of bananas and around 1,200 proteas were exported from the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In agricultural prices: Indices of agricultural products and means of production increased in 2022
- In 2022, the producer price index for agricultural goods in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) increased by 17.4% compared to 2021. This growth can be attributed to the increase in both crop production (+18.2%) and animal production (+10.2%). Among crop production, notable increases were observed in potatoes for consumption (+43.0%), other vegetable products (+39.4%), which includes sweet potato (+41.8%), vegetables (+9.6%), and sugarcane (+7.1%). The growth in animal production was primarily driven by a significant increase in the egg price index (+40.1%).
- The price index of the means of production for current consumption in agriculture experienced a 10.2% increase compared to the previous year. This rise was primarily driven by the price index increases in energy and lubricants (+27.8%), animal feedingstuffs (+16.7%), seed and planting stock (+10.9%), and fertilisers and improvers (+6.0%).
