Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine increased in both volume and value

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., in the 1st quarter 2018 the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 842,750 litres, generating first sale receipts of 4.6 million euros. When compared to the corresponding period of 2017, the quantities sold  increased by 14.6% and the sales value went up by 7.7%.

These results were determined by the increase in demand by the foreign markets, not only from the third countries (+20.9% in volume and +6.6% in value) but also from EU countries (+14.3% in volume and +7.2% in value). The sales to Mainland Portugal dropped. Inversely, the local market showed an increase (+22.6% in volume and +15.3% in value). In the two more profitable foreign markets – France and USA – there were different trends; in the first case a year-on-year growth on first sale receipts of +68.6% was registered while in the second case there was a decline of 18.1%.

Commercialisation of GPI Wine and other alcoholic beverages produced in Madeira also increased in 2017

According to the same source, the commercialisation of spirits produced in Madeira topped 867.7 thousand litres, up by 7.5% over 2016 generating 4.4 million euros in receipts (+12.8% than in 2016). The increase in the sales of Liquer accounts for this growth.

The sales of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Madeiran decreased in volume by 2.1% but in value rose by 2.5%. In the case of GPI (Protected Geographical Indication), the change rates were +13.6% in volume and +21.9% in sales value.
