Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine decreased year-on-year

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 829,951 litres, generating first sale receipts of 4.8 million euros. When compared with the corresponding period of 2018, the quantities sold decreased by 5.6% and the sales value by 1.8%.

For the January to June period, the sales volume and receipts both decreased by 13.5% year-on-year. Exports to third countries (-17.4% in volume and -15.6% in value) and to European Union countries (-15.0% in quantity and -15.2% in first sale receipts) decreased year-on-year. The local market also showed a decrease (-11.6% in volume and -8.8% in value).

Nevertheless, it should be highlighted that exports to UK recorded year-on-year increases of 64.2% in volume and 32.5% in first sale receipts. There was also a growth in the exports to Netherlands (+19.7% in volume and +18.8% in value).

Regarding the top two profitable foreign markets – France and USA – the data show in the first case a year-on-year decrease on first sale receipts of 20.7% and in the second case an increase of 3.4%.
