Commercialisation of “Madeira” wine increased in volume and value when compared to the previous year

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine in 2021 stood at 3.1 million litres, generating first sale receipts of 19.3 million euros. Compared to 2020, the quantities sold and the sales value increased by 19.8% and by 32.1%, respectively.

Regarding the last pre-pandemic year (2019), the changes were -0.7% in volume and +3.6% in value.

In 2021, the national market rose by 63.1% in volume and 70.9% in receipts, when compared to 2020. The sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew in volume (+60.5%) and in value (+53.7%). The shipments to Mainland Portugal registered an increase in volume (68.9%) and sales value (122.1%).

In turn, the EU market registered an increase both in quantities sold (+8.4%) and in value (+15.3%), also as the extra-EU market did (+26.7% and 34.9%, in the same order).

In the EU market, the Belgium stands out, with exports recording an increase of 34.1% in sales volume and 49.1% in sales value. France remained the main market, although showing a 4.5% drop in volume and 1.6% in value. In contrast, the Dutch market also showed an increase in volume (+33.2%) and in value (+21.8%).

In the extra-EU market, the exports to China and Switzerland recorded decreases in the quantities sold (-12.9% e -17.2% respectively), and a decrease in first sale receipts (-22.4% e -14.0% by the same order). The sales to the United States - the main market outside the EU for Madeira Wine - increased by 66.4% in volume and 76.7% in receipts.

Of the total traded, 76.1% of Madeira Wine was sold in bottles at the average price of 7.25 euros per litre (6.80 euros in 2020), while the remaining consisted of bulk wine sold at 2.68 euros per litre (2.67 euros in 2020).

Regarding the 4th quarter of 2021, Madeira Wine recorded a year-on-year change of +29.8% in volume and +36.6% in value.

Certification of embroideries, tapestries and other artifacts increased in 2021

In 2021, the certification of embroideries, tapestries and other artifacts generated 511.0 thousand euros of first sale receipts, increasing by 4.7% compared to 2020, the year in which a minimum was reached since the beginning of the available series of this indicator.

This result represents the reversal of the downward trend that started in 2016, although compared to 2019, there is a 6.3% drop. It should be noted that the increase recorded in 2021 was the result of the growth recorded both in sales to the domestic market (+14.8%) and in sales to foreign markets (+1.8%).

In the year under review, of the total certified by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., around 76% corresponded to the foreign market sales (388.2 thousand euros). The United States (303.5 thousand euros) and Italy (37.1 thousand euros) were the main destination markets for this type of goods. The year-on-year changes for these markets were -1.1% and +67.9%, respectively. Sales to the British market fell by 31.1% compared to 2020, standing at 34.4 thousand euros.
