Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine decreased by 8.4% in volume and by 10.6% in value

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., in the 1st quarter 2015 the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 750,553 litres, generating first sale receipts of 3.9 million euros. In comparison with the corresponding period of 2014, the quantities sold decreased by 8.4% and the sales value fell by 10.6%.

It should be highlighted that in first three months of 2015 exports to France recorded year-on-year increases of 5.9% in volume and 6.0% in first sale receipts. The second external market in the reference period – USA – presented negative change rates (-25.0% in the quantities sold and -19.2% in value). Local market sales also dropped by 32.3% in volume and 34.9% in value.

Commercialisation of PDO Madeiran Wine and other alcoholic beverages produced in Madeira increased in 2014

According to the same data source, the commercialisation of spirits produced in Madeira topped 642 thousand litres, up by 1.5% over 2013.

The sales of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Madeiran Wine also grew; the volume increased by 35.4% while the sales value rose by 44.3%. In the case of GPI (Protected Geographical Indication), the change rates were -13.6% in volume and +0.3% in sales value.
