The Retail Trade sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira showed increases

In 2013, there were 83 retail trade establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira  (74 in 2012) classified as relevant size units, up by 12.2% from 2012. 59.0% of these units are dedicated to the non retail sale of food (or without predominance in retail sale of food), but the retail sale of food (or with predominance in retail sale of food) was the only one to evidence growth, +36.0% over the previous year.

In 2013, these units employed, 3,184 employees (2,120 in 2012), the majority (78.3%) in food retail. There were more women (71.4%) than men working in this type of establishments.

This sector generated a turnover of 369.0 million euros in 2013 (348.0 million euros in 2012), 99.8% of which coming from the sale of goods and the rest from services to customers. Approximately 76.0% (279.9 million euros) of the total amount of sale of goods derived from the food retail.
