Sales of the Large-sized Commercial Units (LSCU) increased by 16.6% compared to the previous year, while employment rose by 3.4%

In 2022, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) presents information on Large-sized Commercial Units (LSCU) for the year 2022, published on the 4th of the current month by Statistics Portugal (INE). A LSCU is an establishment, considered individually or as part of a group owned by the same company or group of companies, where commercial activities are conducted, and which has a noteworthy exhibition and sales area (see specific conditions in the "Em Foco" section).

In 2022, there were 87 Large-sized Commercial Units (LSCU) located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (one fewer than in 2021), with 66.7% dedicated to non-food retail and 33.3% to food retail or with a predominant food focus. It is noteworthy that a substantial portion of these establishments (80.2%) belong to companies headquartered in the mainland.

During that year, LSCUs in the Autonomous Region of Madeira employed 2,959 persons (an increase of 3.4% compared to the previous year), 68.7% of whom were women, with 19.9% of that total working on a temporary basis. These units generated a turnover of 586.4 million euros in 2022 (a 16.6% increase compared to 2021), including 583.9 million euros related to sales.

Food retail, with 29 establishments, generated sales of 396.1 million euros (compared to 345.0 million euros in 2021), while the 58 non-food retail establishments invoiced 187.8 million euros in sales (155.7 million euros in the previous year).

On average, each food retail establishment achieved an annual sales value of 13.7 million euros, a figure that drops to approximately 3.2 million euros for non-food retail establishments.

Food retail units employed 2,008 persons (a 4.5% increase from the previous year), 69.7% of whom were women, with 16.1% of that total working on a temporary basis. In non-food retail units, 951 persons were employed (a 1.1% increase from the previous year), 66.7% of whom were women, with 27.9% of that total working on a temporary basis.

In 2022, the exhibition and sales area in food retail reached 36.8 thousand square meters, and in non-food retail, it was 42.3 thousand square meters.

The number of transactions in LSCU establishments reached 26.1 million. In food retail, the average value per transaction was 19.0 euros (compared to 19.7 euros in 2021), and in non-food retail, it was 36.3 euros (compared to 33.8 euros in 2021).

In food retail units, sales of "food, beverages, and tobacco" accounted for 80.8% of total sales (+0.7 percentage points compared to 2021). In this group, "meat and meat-based products" (15.4%), "other non-specific food products" (15.6%), and "fruits and vegetables" (11.6%) were the main products sold. Among non-food products sold in these units (19.2% of total sales), "cosmetics and personal hygiene" (7.9%), "Other sales and products" (4.4%), and "household cleaning" (3.7%) stood out the most.

In non-food retail establishments, the products with the highest sales were "clothing and accessories" (28.5%), "computers and optical, photographic, and telecommunications equipment" (13.4%), "appliances" (12.6%), and "furniture and decorative items" (10.1%).

In 2022, the sale of private label products amounted to 215.4 million euros in LSCU establishments (+18.7% compared to 2021), representing 34.4% and 42.3% of the overall sales volume for the food and non-food segments, respectively (compared to 33.3% and 42.8% in 2021).

Regarding payment methods used, debit and credit cards were used in 59.4% of sales in food retail (compared to 66.9% in 2021) and 68.3% of sales in non-food retail (compared to 71.6% in 2021). Cash payments represented 29.8% of total sales in food retail (compared to 32.1% in 2021) and 23.0% of non-food retail sales (compared to 23.9% in 2021). It is worth noting the growth of other payment methods, which accounted for 10.7% of sales in food retail (1.1% in 2021) and 8.0% in non-food retail (4.2% in 2021).
