In 2023, the total exports from enterprises headquartered in the ARM amounted to approximately 351.2 million euros, representing a decrease of 2.2% compared to 2022, while imports amounted to 274.3 million euros, declining by 20.3% compared to the preceding year.

During the reference year, the majority of goods exported were destined for third countries (63.8% of the total), while on the import side, the predominance of European Union countries remained (77.1%).

It is noteworthy, however, that this information pertains solely to foreign trade conducted by enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents a small fraction of the region's goods inflow and outflow. Indeed, the majority of trade conducted by the ARM is with Mainland Portugal. Statistical information on this type of trade is not available at present. Also noteworthy is the participation of enterprises based in the Madeira International Business Centre (MIBC) in international trade for both flows. According to the latest data by DREM in this regard, which focused on the year 2022, 79.0% of exports and 52.6% of imports were carried out by enterprises based in the MIBC.
