DREM releases data on “Accidents at work and worked-related health problems”
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the results of “Accidents at work and worked-related health problems” for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). These data were obtained through the 2020 ad-hoc module of the Labour Force Survey (LFS). This module was carried out in the 2nd quarter 2020 together with the LFS, a statistical operation of national scope of Statistics Portugal (INE), which is conducted by DREM in the ARM.
Please note that in the 2nd quarter 2020 the economic restrictions derived from the measures taken to control the COVID-19 pandemic led to some anomalous results. In fact, the employed population dropped by 9.1 thousand persons (-7.1%) year-on-year. The number of persons teleworking (16.9%) was also significant and the number of hours actually worked was the lowest of the 2011 series.
3.3% of the employed population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira had at least one accident at work in the 12 months prior to the interview
In 2020, 4.5 thousand employed persons, aged between 15 and 74 years, mentioned to have had at least one accident at work in the 2nd quarter 2020 or in the prior 12 months, representing 3.3% of the employed population. The ARM and Norte (also 3.3%) were the regions of the country with highest percentage in this indicator, in opposition to the A.R. Azores (2.1%) and Algarve (2.6%). The national average was 3.2%.
In the ARM, the percentage of men that report at least one accident at work was 4.8% (3.3 thousand persons).
9.5 thousand persons aged between 15 and 74 years (i.e. 5.4% of the employed population) complained of at least one work-related health problem in the previous 12 months. These health issues affected 6.4% of the men and 4.4% of the women. The region with the highest value was Alentejo (7.6%) and the lowest percentage was recorded in the A.R. Azores (5.0%) and in the ARM (5.4%). The national average was 6.9%.
Among the persons that reported health problems in the last 12 months caused or aggravated by work, 72.2% mentioned having had two or more problems.
Taking in account the most serious health problem caused or aggravated by work, 47.5% the persons that reported health problems in the last 12 months declared that the health problem occurred in the main current job and 37.5% in the last job. 50.6% of the population mentioned that the health problem limits considerably the ability to perform daily activities and 35.4% said it limits to some extent.
In the 2nd quarter 2020, 80.4% of the employed persons reported that they were exposed to at least one risk factor for physical health at the workplace. In the country that percentage was higher, 82.2%. Men (82.2%) complain more than women (78.7%), with “repetitive hand or arm movements”, “tiring or painful positions“ and “activities involving strong visual concentration” being mentioned by 66.8%, 56.0% and 55.0% of the persons.

The exposure to at least one risk factor for mental well-being at the workplace was reported by 51.5% of the employed persons. 49.5% of the men and 53.7% of the women mentioned these factors. The “severe time pressure or overload of work” was pointed out by 67.6% of the employed persons and “having to deal with difficult customers, patients, pupils, etc”, by 56.9%.
