Proportion of persons between 16 and 74 years old who reported having used the Internet in the last 3 months prior to the interview was higher in the Autonomous Region of Madeira than in the country

According to the results of the Survey on the Usage of Information and Communication Technologies by Households conducted between June and August 2022, 90.8% of the private households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira had access to the Internet at home (87.2% through broadband), an increase of 0.3 percentage points (pp) compared to 2021.Back in 2012, the household internet access rate was only 60.5% (30.3 pp lower than in 2022).

The percentage of households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira with Internet access is higher (86.0%) than at a national level (82.6%). The availability of connections through mobile technology is lower than wireline, standing at 53.0% in the Region (48.3% in Portugal).

In 2022, 95.7% of private households had wireline telecommunications services (including fixed internet, landline and subscription TV). This is a higher value than that recorded for Portugal by 2.7 percentage points (93.0%).

The main subscribed service referred to by households is subscription TV (93.6%) and 74.0% of households have this service integrated into a package. This is followed by fixed internet (86.0%) and landline (79.0%). Comparing the figures of the Region with the mainland, these three services have a lower proportion of subscribers in Portugal: 87.9% of the Portuguese subscribers have subscription TV, 82.6% fixed internet and 73.1% landline. The proportion of households with access to Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT), that is, with access to a television set that allows the broadcast of national generalist channels live and free of charge through TDT signal in their main residence is 32.8% in the Region (38.6% in Portugal).

The proportion of persons living in the Autonomous Region of Madeira aged between 16 and 74 years who reported having used the internet in the last 3 months prior to the interview stood at 86.1%, reflecting an increase of 2.0 pp compared to 2021 (84.1%). The proportion of internet users in the 3 months prior to the interview (84.5%), recorded for the country as a whole was lower than in the Region. Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (91.1%), the Algarve (87.4%) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores (86.3%) had a higher value than the Autonomous Region of Madeira in internet use in the last 3 months. Norte was the region of the country with the lowest proportion (80.3%).

Among those who used the Internet in the 3 months prior to the interview, 70.3% indicated using some type of equipment or system whose operation is connected to the internet (the so-called Internet of Things). This percentage was lower than the national average by 3.6 pp.

In 2022, 32.5% of the residents in the Region aged 16 to 74 years used e-commerce in the last 3 months, i.e., +1.3 pp than in 2021, the highest value in the series started in 2013. In Portugal, this rate was higher (42.7%).
