Sales by enterprises headquartered in the Region through e-commerce accounted for 11.7% of the total turnover

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the main results of the 2024 Survey on the Use of Information and Communication Technologies, for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). This survey is conducted nationwide, usually between March and July each year, with coordination for the ARM conducted by DREM.

In 2024, 98.3% of enterprises in the ARM and 38.8% of employees have internet access for professional purposes, an increase of 0.8 percentage points and 0.5 percentage points, respectively, compared to 2023. At the national level, these indicators were 98.0% and 50.5%, respectively.

Sales through e-commerce accounted for 11.7% of the total turnover in 2023 (an increase of 3.6 percentage points from the previous year), reaching 627 million euros (an increase of 79.3% compared to 2022). Nationally, these indicators corresponded to 19.5% (+0.5 pp compared to 2022) and 76.454 billion euros (+12.2% compared to 2022), respectively.

In 2024, 17.7% of enterprises employ ICT specialists (+1.6 pp compared to 2022). In 2023, 4.8% of enterprises recruited or tried to recruit ICT specialists, and of these enterprises, 29.6% had difficulties filling these vacancies.

In the same year, 91.9% of enterprises used at least one ICT security measure (+5.6 pp compared to 2022). The main ICT security measures used by these enterprises, in 2024, were authentication via strong password (93.8%), data backup in a separate location (74.8%) and network access control (67.7%).

In 2024, 5.3% of enterprises use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, an increase of 1.8 percentage points from 2023, with the most commonly used being those that analyse written language (text mining) and those that generate written or spoken language (natural language generation).
