Main fuels released for consumption decreased by 15.1% year-on-year

In the 1st quarter of 2021, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 28.3 million litres, decreasing by 15.1% compared to the same period of 2020.

This result reflects the effects of the restricitive measures to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In January, the main fuels released for consumption dropped by 27.4% year-on-year, a decline that became less pronounced in February, -19.8%, while in March it increased by 5.5%. This result derives from the fact that it was in March 2020 that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic began to be felt.

20.8 million litres of the main fuel - diesel oil - were released for consumption in the reference period, down by 13.7% over the same quarter of the previous year. In the case of gasolines, the demand for unleaded 95 gasoline dropped by 23.1%, while the demand for unleaded 98 decreased by 4.8%. The sales of these fuels were 5.4 and 2.1 million litres, respectively.

Concerning gas, the release for consumption of propane and butane in the 1st quarter of 2021 stood at 1.7 (-3.6% in the 1st quarter of 2020) and 3.3 thousand tonnes (down by 15.2% year-on-year), respectively. 5.7 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the reference period, a 13.4% decrease over the year-ago quarter.

Average price of diesel in the first quarter of 2021 was €1.242

In the 1st quarter of 2021, the mean price for diesel oil was €1.242, a lower price than the one registered in the corresponding quarter of 2020 (€1.265). If compared to the previous quarter, the price of this type of fuel shows an increase of 12.5 cents.

The mean price for unleaded 95 gasoline was €1.451, decreasing by 2.0 cents compared to the 1st quarter of 2020 and increasing by 9.1 cents from the previous quarter.
