In 2016
Electricity production increased by 0.3% compared with the previous year
In 2016, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, increased by 0.3% compared with the previous year.
Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that, compared to 2015, the electricity generated by thermal power decreased by 6.3%. This decline was compensated by the growth in production through other sources, mainly by hydropower (+57.7%) and wind power (+10.5%). Thermal power represented 70.1% of the total production in 2016 (75.0% in 2015). It should also be mentioned that despite the 24.4% drop between 2015 and 2016, the production of thermal power based on natural gas represented 14.0% of the total production mix.
The 0.5% year-on-year growth in the 4th quarter of 2016 contributed to the aforementioned increase in the electricity production of that year.
