In the first nine months of 2020
Electricity production decreased by 7.6% year-on-year
In the first nine months of 2020, electricity production, estimated from the data of electricity distribution provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), decreased by 7.6% year-on-year.
Breaking down the data by source, it should be highlighted that, compared to in the first nine months of 2019, hydropower was the only source to have a slight year-on-year increase of 1.3%, while all the other sources showed a decrease. Production of electricity using renewable sources accounted for 24.8% of the total, up by 0.6 percentage points year-on-year. It should also be mentioned that the production of electric energy using natural gas represented 19.9% of the total production mix.
In the 3rd quarter 2020, the distribution of electric energy decreased by 8.3% from the year-ago quarter. Breakdown by month, the data show that the drop was more pronounced in July (-10.4%) than in August (-8.9%) and September (-5.5%).
DREM publishes today on its website data for 2018 compiled by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) concerning the consumption of electric energy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The gross production of electric energy for 2019 is also made available now.
