In 2020
Electricity production decreased by 7.2% from the previous year
In 2020, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, decreased by 7.2% compared with the previous year.
Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that the electricity generated by hydropower increased by 46.5%. This increase was accompanied by a drop in the production through other sources, mainly by wind (-11.1%), thermal power (-10.5%) and photovoltaic (-9.0%). Consequently, the share of distributed energy using thermal source went from 75.8% in 2019 to 73.1% in the reference period, which means that the production of renewable energy has increased to a share of 26.9% in 2020 (24.2% in the previous year).
It should also be mentioned that the production of electric energy using natural gas represented 20.1% of the total production mix, slightly decreasing by 1.0% year-on-year.
In the 4th quarter 2020, the distribution of electric energy decreased by 6.1% from the year-ago quarter.
