In the 1st quarter of 2023
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 1.5% year-on-year.
In the first quarter of 2023, electricity production increased by 1.5% year-on-year, according to data provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira.
Breaking down the data by source, a total of around 222.9 Gigawatt hours (Gwh) of electricity was generated during the period, with photovoltaic and thermal power sources contributing to the increase in production by 9.7% and 19.4%, respectively. However, there was a decline in the production through wind power (-32.3%), hydropower (-14.2%) and solid waste power (-7.7%). As a result, the share of total of energy generated from thermal sources went from 54.7% in the 1st quarter of 2022 to 64.4% in the reference period. Consequently, the share of renewables stood at 35.6% in the period under review (45.3% year-on-year).
It is noteworthy that thermal natural gas had a lower preponderance as a source in the production of electricity representing only 6.2% of the total (20.2% in 2022).
