In 2024,

Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.0% compared to the previous year

The production of electricity estimated based on data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), demonstrated a 2.0% growth compared to 2023.

An analysis of the electricity production mix in 2024 — which totalled approximately 953.4 Gigawatt hours (GWh) — reveals a marked increase in the contribution of wind power (+39.3%), urban solid waste (+8.6%), hydroelectric (+4.3%), and photovoltaic energy sources (+2.4%), while thermal energy sources experienced a decline (-5.1%).

The share of total electricity production from thermal sources decreased from 72.1% in 2023 to 67.1% in 2024. Conversely, the proportion of renewable sources rose from 27.9% to 32.9%, representing the highest percentage since the beginning of the available series in 2009.

It is noteworthy that natural gas maintained a significant role in electricity production, accounting for 16.5% of the total, compared to 13.2% during the same period in 2023. This reflects a 27.4% increase in electricity production from natural gas compared to the previous year.

Focusing on the fourth quarter of 2024, electricity production amounted to 244.8 GWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.2%.
