In the 1st quarter of 2016
Electricity production increased by 0.9% year-on-year
In the 1st quarter of 2016, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, increased by 0.9% year-on-year. Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that the electricity generated by wind power and photovoltaics decreased by 30.7% and 8.1%, respectively, compared to the same period of 2015. This decline was compensated by the growth in production through other sources, mainly by hydropower (+25.5%) and thermal power (+3.5%), the latter representing 67.5% of the total production in the 1st quarter of 2016 (65.8% in the same quarter of the previous year). It should also be mentioned that despite the year-on-year 29.2% drop, the production of thermal power based on natural gas represented 12.6% of the total production mix.
