Value of transacted dwelling sales in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased compared to the previous and year-earlier quarters

In the 1st quarter of 2026, 665 dwellings were transacted in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), representing a decrease of 23.1% compared to the previous quarter and of 25.6% year-on-year.

Of the total dwellings sold in the quarter, 543 were existing dwellings (81.7% of the total), with the remaining 122 (18.3%) being new dwellings. Compared to the previous quarter, both segments recorded changes in the same direction, with a decrease of 17.5% in sales of existing dwellings and of 41.1% in sales of new dwellings. Compared to the year-earlier quarter, the respective changes were -11.6% and -56.4%.

The value of dwellings transacted in the reference period stood at 215.2 million euros, representing a decrease of 21.7% compared with the previous quarter (274.8 million euros) and of 19.0% relative to the same quarter of the previous year (265.6 million euros).For new dwellings, the value of sales reached 51.7 million euros (-45.1% and -51.3% compared to the previous and year-earlier quarters, respectively), while that relating to existing dwellings stood at 163.5 million euros (-9.5% and +2.5% compared to the previous and year-earlier quarters, in the same order).

In the reference quarter, households residing in the ARM acquired 554 residential dwellings, -20.6% and -24.6% compared to the previous and year-earlier quarters, respectively. In value terms, transactions of this type amounted to 178.9 million euros, -20.9% compared to the previous quarter and -15.7% compared to the 1st quarter of 2025.

For the country as a whole, 37.7 thousand dwellings were transacted in the 1st quarter of 2026, representing a quarterly decline of 12.4% and a year-on-year drop of 8.7%. These transactions generated 9.9 billion euros, -7.9% compared to the 4th quarter of 2025 and +3.2% compared to the same period of the previous year.
