Proportion of mean annual household expenditure increased in housing and decreased in food compared to 2015

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the characterisation of households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) and the final results from the 2022/2023 Household Budget Survey (HBS) for the ARM. This survey was conducted between February 2022 and February 2023, with a sample of 1,480 dwellings in the Region.

According to the HBS 2022/2023 results, it was estimated that there were 94,792 resident households in the ARM. The majority of households in the region did not have dependent children (65.8%), with the most common being those with two or more adults, including at least one elderly person (21.6%). Households with only one dependent child constituted 18.8% of the total, while those with two or more dependent children totalled 15.4%.

The main source of income for most households was salaried employment (56.6%), followed by pensions (32.0%) and self-employment (5.3%).

Considering the reference individual of the household, who is the member with the highest proportion of annual net total income, 53.9% were men, 44.6% were aged between 45 and 64, and 65.1% were employed.

The results indicate that the average annual total expenditure per household in the ARM was 22,605 euros, representing an increase of 24.2% compared to the average annual expenditure of 18,204 euros in 2015/2016. Of this expenditure, 65.4% was monetary expenditure and 34.6% was non-monetary expenditure.

In the ARM, 39.7% of the total expenditure was allocated to Housing (including costs for water, electricity, gas, and other fuels), which, together with Transport expenses (13.4%) and “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” (11.6%), accounted for 64.7% of the average annual expenditure of all households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The class “Restaurants and accommodation” constituted 8.9% of the expenditure, while the classes “Health” and “Furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance” each represented 4.5%. Notably, expenditures on “Education services” in 2022/2023 constituted only 1.0% of the average annual total expenditure of households in the Region.

Analysing the average annual total expenditure per household by occupancy status, it is observed that homeowners had expenditure values approximately one-third (+32.8%) higher than those of renters, estimated at 23,886 euros and 17,983 euros, respectively, for these two groups.

Considering the average expenditure of households by total income per equivalent adult quintiles, households in the 1st quintile (the 20% with the lowest incomes) had an expenditure (15,977 euros) equivalent to 70.7% of the average total expenditure (22,605 euros). At the other extreme, households with income in the 5th quintile (the 20% with the highest incomes) recorded an average total expenditure 51.4% above the national average (34,213 euros), more than double that of households in the 1st quintile.

In 2022/2023, the average annual total expenditure per Madeiran household in “Health” constituted 4.5% of the total expenditure (1,028 euros). It is estimated that 16,138 households had monetary health expenses exceeding 10% of their net monetary income, representing 17.0% of all households. Households with health expenses exceeding 25% were estimated at 3,250, representing 3.4% of all households. The ARM was the NUT 2 region with the highest values for these two indicators. Nationally, 12.1% of households had health expenses exceeding 10%, and 1.9% had health expenses exceeding 25%.

At the NUTS 2 level, Área Metropolitana de Lisboa stood out as the region with the highest average annual total expenditure per household, amounting to 26,891 euros, followed by Algarve with 24,432 euros, both above the national average of 23,900 euros. Among the regions that stood below the national average, the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA) had the lowest average annual expenditure, 19,431 euros, followed by Alentejo with 21,359 euros. Norte was the region with the highest value below the national average (23,245 euros), followed by the Autonomous Region of Madeira with 22,605 euros.
