Life expectancy at birth in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated to be 78.77 years
Statistics Portugal released today the life tables by NUTS 2 region for the three-year period 2020-2022. It is noteworthy that, for the first time, these tables incorporate population estimates based on the final results of the 2021 Census, so the results are not comparable to those of previous three-year periods.
For the three-year period 2020-2022, life expectancy at birth for the resident population in the Region was estimated to be 78.77 years: 75.05 years for men and 81.63 years for women, indicating that women can expect to live almost 7 years longer than men.
For the entire country, life expectancy at birth was estimated to be 80.96 years (2.19 years higher than the estimate for the Region). The results also indicate that in the country as a whole, women can expect to live 83.52 years and men 78.05 years. Norte has the highest longevity (81.53 years), in contrast to the Autonomous Region of the Azores, where life expectancy at birth is the lowest in the country (78.04 years).
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, life expectancy at age 65 reached 17.95 years in the three-year period 2020-2022. Men aged 65 can expect to live an average of 15.38 more years, while women can expect 19.71 more years, resulting in a 4.33-year difference in these ages.
Life expectancy at age 65 for the total Portuguese population stood at 19.61 years (1.66 years more than in the Region): 17.76 years for men and 20.98 years for women. It is also in Norte where the highest longevity at age 65 is observed (19.88 years), and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the lowest (17.65 years).
From the survival function of the complete life table for the Region, broken down by gender, for the three-year period 2020-2022, it is evident that women survive in greater numbers to older ages compared to men. For example, it is estimated that 81.1% of male newborns and 91.4% of female newborns will survive to the age of 65 if subject to the specific age-specific mortality probabilities observed during the 2020-2022 period throughout their lives.
