DREM releases “In Focus” about the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Region

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) celebrates on May 17, 40 years of existence as a regionalised government department. To mark the date, an “In Focus”  about the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly in the months of March and April is released today.

The main conclusions are summarised below:

Deaths - March figures below the last two years, unlike April

Health - Number of COVID cases per inhabitant in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is significantly lower than the national average

Labour market - Unemployment rate in the 1st quarter may have been conditioned by pandemic containment measures

Marketing of “Madeira” wine - EU market heavily penalised in March

Enterprises - More than half of the enterprises expect a reduction in turnover above 50%

Formed and dissolved corporations - Number of formed corporations in March was the lowest of the last 5 ½ years

Fuels released for consumption - Prices of the main fuel prices sank in April

Distribution of electricity - Sharp reduction in energy distribution since the 2nd half of March

Consumer Prices Index - Prices of food products and non-alcoholic beverages increased in April compared to the previous month

Multibanco Network - Negative results of March and April foreshadow a sharp drop in private consumption

Transport - Number of passengers in air, sea and land transport with pronounced decline in March

Tourism - Overnight stays close to a 50% drop in March.
