DREM starts to release meteorological information on a monthly basis
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) begins today, on European Statistics Day 2023, to publish a monthly summary of key meteorological data on its website. This summary is complemented by a dashboard that enables users to easily and interactively explore the monthly dataset as well as the data from the previous day. These statistics are sourced from the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA I.P) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In September 2023, the Funchal/Lido station recorded the highest average temperature at 24.8°C, while the Pico do Areeiro station had the lowest average temperature at 12.9°C.
When compared to the climatological normals1 (the average values for the reference period of air temperature), in September 2023, all stations for which this information was available (8 stations) showed higher values. Notably, Santo da Serra exhibited a deviation of +2.6°C from the normal for that station.
Regarding the maximum and minimum air temperatures in the past month, the extremes were recorded at the Funchal/Lido station (30.1°C on the 3rd) and the Pico do Areeiro station (4.5°C on the 17th).
Precipitation
In general, when compared to the climatological normal for the period 1961-1990, the values recorded in September were lower than this reference. The Chão do Areeiro station stood out with a negative anomaly of approximately 94.8 mm, while Porto Santo/Aeroporto exhibited the highest positive anomaly in relation to the normal (28.4 mm).
In September 2023, the highest precipitation value was recorded at the Bica da Cana meteorological station (142.9 mm), whereas the lowest value was observed at the Funchal/Lido station (24.0 mm). On the 7th, the highest daily precipitation value was observed at the Ponta do Pargo station (45.8 mm), and the lowest value occurred at the São Vicente station on the same day (10.2 mm).
When analysing days with precipitation (days with light rain, rainy, and very rainy days), it was found that the maximum number of days with light rain (0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Lombo da Terça station (27 days). Similarly, for rainy days (1.0 mm of precipitation or more), the Lombo da Terça station registered the highest number of such days (18 days). In terms of very rainy days (10 mm of precipitation or more), the Santo da Serra and Lombo da Terça stations both recorded 4 days.
Relative Humidity
In September 2023, the monthly average values of relative air humidity ranged from 66% at the Funchal/Observatory to 96% at the Lombo da Terça station. The lowest daily relative air humidity, at 4%, was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 28th, while the highest, at 100%, was reached at 11 stations on various days throughout the month of September.
Wind
In September 2023, among stations equipped with anemometers (16 stations), the Lombo da Terça station recorded the highest average wind speed at 16.1 km/h, while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station had the lowest average wind speed at 3.7 km/h. The highest wind gusts were observed on the 3rd at the Chão do Areeiro station and on the 16th at the Santa Catarina/Aeroporto station, with gusts reaching 67 km/h at both stations.
Note: 1 - The normals for the periods 1971-2000 are used for the Porto Santo/Aeroporto and Funchal/Observatório stations. The normals for the other stations are based on the period 1961-1990.
