In October 2023, at the Funchal/Observatory station, the daily maximum temperature exceeded 30°C on ten days of the month, with nine consecutive days surpassing this threshold
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a synthesis of the main meteorological data for the month of October 2023, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature:
In October 2023, the highest average temperature (25.1°C) was recorded at 2 stations (Funchal/Observatory and Lugar de Baixo), while the lowest average temperature was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (15.1°C).
Compared to climatological normals1, all stations for which this information could be provided (7 stations) showed higher values in October 2023, with Santo da Serra standing out with a +6.9°C deviation from the normal for that station.
Regarding the maximum and minimum air temperatures recorded in the last month, extremes were observed at the São Vicente station (36.4°C on the 10th) and the Pico do Areeiro station (3.5°C on the 23rd).
It is noteworthy that, at the Funchal/Observatory station, the maximum temperature exceeded 30°C on 10 days of the month, with nine consecutive days. This marked the longest period, since meteorological records in Madeira, with a maximum temperature above 30°C. Only in 4 stations (Porto Santo, Pico Alto, Chão do Areeiro, and Pico do Areeiro) were there no days in October 2023 with temperatures exceeding 30°C.
Precipitation:
Compared with the climatological normal for October 1961-1990, the Chão do Areeiro station stood out with a negative anomaly of approximately 67.4 mm. Santa Catarina/Aeroporto stood out with the highest positive anomaly compared to the normal (29.0 mm).
In October 2023, the highest precipitation value was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station (240.0 mm). In contrast, the lowest value was recorded at Funchal/Lido (49.3 mm). On the 22nd, the highest daily precipitation value was observed at the Chão do Areeiro station (108.4 mm).
Analysing days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), it is concluded that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santana station (18 days), with the Pico do Areeiro station registering the highest number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) with 10 days. Regarding the number of very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more), the Santana and Pico do Areeiro stations recorded 5 days.
Relative Humidity:
In October 2023, the monthly average values of relative humidity ranged between 50% in Quinta Grande and 82% in São Jorge. The minimum daily value of relative humidity (2%) was recorded at the Quinta Grande station on 7 days in October, and the maximum value (100%) was reached at 10 stations on different days in October.
Wind:
In October 2023, among the 16 stations with an anemometer, the Chão do Areeiro station recorded the highest average wind speed (18.2 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (4.6 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 21st at Chão do Areeiro (138 km/h).
Note: 1 – The normals for the period 1971–2000 are used for the Porto Santo/Aeroporto and Funchal/Observatory stations. The normals for the other stations are based on the period 1961-1990.
