Chão do Areeiro station stood out for the greatest negative precipitation anomaly (-310.5 mm) compared to the climatological normal
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a synthesis of the main meteorological data for the month of November 2023, simultaneously updating its respective Dashboard. This information is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In November 2023, the highest average temperature (22.0 °C) was recorded at 2 stations (Funchal/Lido and Lugar de Baixo), and the lowest average temperature was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (12.5 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals1 of November, all stations for which this information could be provided (7 stations) showed higher values, with Chão do Areeiro standing out with a deviation of +5.0 °C from the normal for this station.
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded last month, the extremes were recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station (28.2 °C on the 22nd) and the Pico do Areeiro station (1.3 °C on the 8th). It is noteworthy that, at the Lugar de Baixo station, the maximum temperature was equal to or higher than 25 °C on 17 days of the month, while the normal value for this station is 2.3 days.
Precipitation
In November 2023, the highest total precipitation value was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (143.4 mm), with the highest daily precipitation value observed on the 30th (88.1 mm). In contrast, the lowest monthly value was recorded at Lugar de Baixo (4.0 mm). Compared to the climatological normal for November 1961-1990, Chão do Areeiro station exhibited a negative anomaly of approximately 310.5 mm. No station stood out with positive values compared to the normal.
Analysing days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), it is concluded that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santana station (21 days). For rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more), Chão do Areeiro and Santo da Serra stations recorded the highest value (6 days). Regarding the number of very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more), the Chão do Areeiro and São Vicente stations recorded 3 days.
Relative Humidity
In November 2023, the monthly average values of relative humidity ranged between 55% at Pico do Areeiro and 95% at Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative humidity (2%) was recorded at the Quinta Grande station, and the maximum value (100%) was reached at 8 stations on different days of November.
Wind
In November 2023, among the 16 stations with anemometers, the Chão do Areeiro station recorded the highest average wind speed (16.0 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (4.7 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 6th at Chão do Areeiro (89 km/h).
Note: 1 - The normals for the period 1971-2000 are used for the Porto Santo/Aeroporto and Funchal/Observatory stations. The normals for the other stations are based on the period 1961-1990.
