There were 29 days with a maximum temperature above 25 ºC at the Lugar de Baixo station
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for July 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard, which now includes data from the Selvagem Grande station. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM).
Air Temperature
In July 2024, the highest average temperature (24.1 °C) was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station while the lowest average temperature was recorded at Santo da Serra (18.0 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals2 for July, all stations for which this information was available (7 stations) showed higher values, with Chão do Areeiro standing out with +3.6 °C deviation from its normal temperature.
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in July, the highest extreme was observed at the Pico Alto station (31.4 °C on the 25th). The lowest extreme was recorded at Pico do Areeiro (6.6 °C on the 2nd). Lugar de Baixo station recorded 29 days this month with maximum temperatures above 25 ºC when the normal value for this station is 14.9 days.
Precipitation
In July 2024, the highest total precipitation recorded at the Santana station (48.4 mm). However, the maximum value of daily precipitation (19.9 mm) was observed on the 29th at São Vicente.
Compared to the 1961-1990 climatological normal for July, the Santana station showed a positive anomaly of 21.2 mm, with the normal being equal to 27.2 mm. Santo da Serra and Porto Santo/Airport showed positive values. On the other hand, the Chão do Areeiro station showed a total rainfall of just 2.3 mm, lower than normal (13.2 mm).
Analyzing the days with precipitation (rainy, rainy and very rainy days), it was found that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (22 days). The maximum number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra and Santana stations (9 days). This last station also recorded 2 very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more).
Relative Humidity
In July 2024, the average monthly of relative humidity ranged from 44% at Pico do Areeiro to 95% in Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (3%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 5th and 13th, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at 7 stations, on different days of the month.
Wind
In July 2024, among stations with an anemometer, the Ponta de São Lourenço station recorded the highest average wind intensity (20.2 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (3.2 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 4th in Ponta de São Lourenço (75.0 km/h).
Sunshine duration
The maximum and minimum sunshine duration inJuly were 266.9 hours in Santa Catarina/Aeroporto3, and 177.9 hours at the Funchal Observatory, with the normal value for latter station being 220.5 hours. Porto Santo showed 248.1 hours of sunshine, higher than normal (223.0 hours).
Sea Water Temperature
In July, the average sea water temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 22.8 °C (+1.2 °C than the normal value for this month). The highest average was recorded on the 27th and 28th (24.1 °C) and the lowest (21.6 °C) on 1st.

1 - Daily data and cumulative values for the month refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
2 -The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.
3 - There are no normal values for insolation for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
