Chão do Areeiro was the rainiest station, despite recording nearly half the normal rainfall
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for November 2024, while simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In November 2024, the highest average temperature (21.9 °C) was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station, while the lowest average temperature was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (10.1 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals² for November, all seven stations for which this information was available recorded higher-than-normal values. The Chão do Areeiro station, with an average temperature of 11.2 °C, recorded the highest deviation from the normal for this month (+3.4 °C).
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in November, the highest extreme (31.0 °C) was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station on the 11th, while the lowest extreme (1.3 °C) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 15th. The Funchal/Observatory station recorded 14 days with maximum temperatures exceeding 25 °C, compared to the normal value of 1.9 days for this station.
Precipitation
In November 2024, the highest total precipitation (244.2 mm) was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro meteorological station, which also recorded the highest daily precipitation (74.7 mm on the 3rd).
Compared to the climatological normals2 for November 1961-1990, almost all stations recorded negative anomalies, except for the Funchal/Observatory station, with a total of 108.5 mm (+26.1 mm) and the Lugar de Baixo station, with a total of 100.3 mm (+8.5 mm). The Chão do Areeiro station, despite recording the highest total precipitation, showed a significant anomaly of -205.7 mm (normal value of 449.9 mm).
When analysing days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), Santo da Serra recorded the highest number of rainy days (22 days with 0.1 mm or more), also recording the same station, the highest number of very rainy days (days with 1.0 mm or more of precipitation), along with seven others (15 days). Pico do Areeiro and Chão do Areeiro each recorded 7 very rainy days (days with 10 mm or more of precipitation).
Relative Humidity
In November 2024, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 64% at Quinta Grande to 84% at Caniçal. The minimum daily value of relative humidity (3%) was recorded at the Quinta Grande station on the 30th, while the maximum value (100%) was recorded at ten stations on different days of the month.
Wind
In November 2024, among the stations equipped with anemometers, the Selvagem Grande station recorded the highest average wind intensity (25.3 km/h), while the Lido station recorded the lowest (2.6 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 24th at the Chão do Areeiro station (128 km/h).
Sunshine Duration
The sunshine duration (number of hours of clear sky) in November was 167.8 hours at the Funchal/Observatory station (normal value of 151.7 hours), 155.4 hours at the Santa Catarina/Airport³ station, and 152.3 hours at the Porto Santo/Airport station (normal value of 146.3 hours).
Seawater Temperature
In November, the average seawater temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 22.3 °C, 1.4 °C above the normal value for this month. The highest average temperature was recorded on the 1st (23.0 °C), and the lowest was observed on the 26th (21.5 °C).

² The 1971-2000 normals were used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the other stations, the 1961-1990 normals were applied.
