Funchal/Observatory was the warmest station and Santana the wettest

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for September 2025, while simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard.
This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air temperature

In September 2025, the highest average air temperature (24.3 °C) was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station, while the lowest (14.3 °C) was recorded at Chão do Areeiro.

When compared with the climatological normals² for September, of the seven stations for which this information was available, all recorded values above the respective normals, with Santo da Serra standing out, recording 2.3 °C above the normal for this month (15.7 °C).

Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded during the month, the highest value (33.9 °C) was observed at Quinta Grande on the 19th, and the lowest (4.1 °C) at Pico do Areeiro on the 30th. The Lugar de Baixo station registered 29 days with maximum temperatures above 25 °C, while the normal for this station is 24.5 days.

Precipitation

In September 2025, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the Santana station (163.6 mm).
However, the highest daily precipitation value (63.3 mm) was observed at Pico do Areeiro on the 22nd.

Compared with the 1961–1990 climatological normal for September, positive deviations were recorded at Santana (+78.2 mm), Santo da Serra (+10.3 mm), and Porto Santo/Airport (+3.1 mm), while the remaining stations showed negative anomalies, most notably Chão do Areeiro (-61.9 mm) and Funchal/Observatory (-34.5 mm).

Analysing the number of days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days and very rainy days), the Santo da Serra station recorded the highest number of days with rain (24 days with 0.1 mm or more) and also the highest number of rainy days (13 days with 1.0 mm or more).

In Santana, there were 5 very rainy days (with precipitation equal to or greater than 10 mm), the highest number among the stations analysed.

Relative humidity

In September 2025, the monthly mean relative humidity ranged between 59% at Quinta Grande and 91% at Santo da Serra.
The lowest daily value (2%) occurred at Pico do Areeiro (on the 6th) and Quinta Grande (on the 18th and 19th), while the maximum value (100%) was reached at ten stations, on different days of the month.

Wind

In September 2025, among the stations equipped with anemometers, the highest average wind intensity (20.0 km/h) was recorded at Santa Catarina/Airport, while the lowest (3.6 km/h) was observed at Monte.
The highest gust (75 km/h) was recorded at Pico Alto on the 1st.

Sunshine

In September 2025, the total sunshine duration (number of hours of bright sunshine) reached 226.1 hours at Funchal/Observatory, a value above the climatological normal (188.7 hours).
At Santa Catarina/Airport³, 213.3 hours were recorded, while Porto Santo/Airport totalled 190.6 hours, below the normal value (203.8 hours).

Sea water temperature

In September, the mean sea water temperature measured at the Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 23.3 °C, 0.4 °C above the normal for this month.
The highest mean value (23.9 °C) was recorded on the 1st and 2nd, and the lowest (22.5 °C) on the 28th.

1 – Daily data and monthly accumulated values refer to observations taken from 09:00 to 09:00.
2 – The 1971–2000 normals were used for Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the 1961–1990 normals were used.
3 – There are no normal values for sunshine duration available for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
