DREM releases the first results of the Community Innovation Survey 2020

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases the first results on entrepreneurial innovation, for the reference period 2018 to 2020, for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), based on the Community Innovation Survey 2020 (CIS 2020).

This biennial statistical operation is the result of cooperation between Statistics Portugal (INE) and the Directorate General of Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), an entity with delegated powers under the scope of the National Statistical System. Regarding the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the coordination of the operation was the responsibility of DREM, and the CIS was carried out with 466 enterprises headquartered in the Region.

In the 2018-2020 triennium, 42.6% of enterprises with more than 10 employees based in the Autonomous Region of Madeira had innovation activities

In the 2018-2020 period, 42.6% of the enterprises headquartered in the ARM had some type of innovation activity (33.5% between 2016-2018), which generated expenditure, whether related to completed product or process innovation activities, ongoing activities until the end of 2020, abandoned or suspended innovation activities, or research and development (R&D) activities developed internally, continuously or occasionally, or contracted R&D from other enterprises (including from their group) or public or private research organisations. This percentage was lower than in the country (48.0%).

In the 2018-2020 triennium, 21.9% of enterprises developed product innovation (goods and/or services) and 40.3% introduced process innovation. Compared to the period 2016-2018, there was a decrease of 4.2 pp in product innovation and an increase of 9.7 pp in process innovation, with strong indications that this change is associated with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on enterprises processes, namely the teleworking and the investment in technology and equipment that made it feasable, the adjustment in communication channels (including the implementation of online sales) and the adaptation of processes and procedures related to the adoption of the teleworking regime and non-face-to-face contacts. At a national level, the values were 22.3% and 42.7%, respectively.

In 2020, the total expenditure on innovation activities reached 22.8 million euros, down by 15.2% compared to 2018, representing 0.9% of the total turnover of enterprises (0.8% in 2018). Of that amount, 47.7% corresponded to other innovation expenses (10.9 million euros), 41.8% to expenses with R&D developed internally - intramural (9.5 million euros) and 10.6% to expenses with R&D contracted to third parties - extramural (2.4 million euros). For the Country, the expenditure amounted to 2,735.8 million euros, 5.3% more than in 2018.

In the ARM and in the 2018-2020 period, 3.0% of innovative enterprises cooperated in R&D and/or other innovation activities, - 2.3 pp than the national value (5.3%). In the triennium 2016-2018, in the ARM, this indicator had been higher, 4.6%.

20.5% of enterprises introduced innovations with environmental benefits obtained in the enterprises and/or during the consumption or use of goods or services by the user. 19.0% were innovations with environmental benefits obtained in the enterprises and 18.1% were innovations with environmental benefits obtained during the consumption or use of goods and services by the user. If the distribution is considered only for enterprises with innovation activities, the corresponding values were the following: 48.1%, 44.6% and 42.6%, respectively.
