Gross monthly earnings per employee in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.3%
In the 2nd quarter of 2022, the gross monthly earnings per employee (per job) increased by 2.3% compared to the same period in 2021 standing at 1,402 euros. Regular earnings (which do not include e.g., overtime, holiday and Christmas bonuses) and base earnings (which exclude e.g., food allowance, seniority earnings or bonuses) rose by 1.9% and by 1.8% to 1,113 euros and 1,067 euros, respectively. In real terms, i.e., subtracting inflation during this period, as measured by the change in the Consumer Price Index of the Region, the average total, regular and base earnings per employee decreased by 5.2%, 5.6% and 5.7%, respectively. These results comprise 97.5 thousand jobs corresponding to Social Security’s beneficiaries and subscribers of Caixa Geral de Aposentações.
Compared to the previous year, the largest increases in total earnings were registered in " Information and communication" (+15.5%), in enterprises with 5 to 9 employees (+10.7%), in the private sector (+4.7%), and in enterprises in "Medium-technology manufacturing industries" (+9.0%). The smallest changes in total earnings were recorded in " Professional, scientific and technical activities" (-0.8%), in enterprises with 250-499 employees (-3.5%), in the General Government sector (+2.3%) and in "Market knowledge-intensive services" (-3.0%).
Gross monthly earnings per employee in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 37 euros (-2.6%) lower than in the country (1,439 euros), in the 2nd quarter of 2022. The nominal change compared to the previous year was 3.1% in the country and in real terms, the change in the country was -4.6%.
In Portugal, the highest total gross wages sector was “Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply" while in the Region it was “Financial and insurance activities” with 3,527 euros and 3,191 euros, respectively. When broken down by employee group, enterprises with 250 to 499 employees registered the highest values both in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and at a national level, with 1,770 euros and 1,791 euros, respectively. In the two geographical units, the total gross monthly earnings per employee in the private sector were year-on-year higher than in the general government sector, by 4.7% and 2.3% in the Region, and by 4.4% and 1.4% in Portugal.
