Turnover generated by trade enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 1.2% compared to the previous year
In 2023, the trade enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira generated a turnover of 3 797.2 million euros (an increase of 1.2% compared to the previous year) and employed 14 325 employees (a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year).

The Trade sector is divided into three activities: Trade, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (Division 45 of CAE Rev. 3), Wholesale Trade (Division 46), and Retail Trade (Division 47).
The 3 712 active enterprises (a 1.0% increase from 2022) in the trade sector were distributed among 654 enterprises dedicated to “Trade, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (17.6% of the total), 1 073 focused on “Wholesale Trade excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles” (28.9% of the total), and 1 985 related to “Retail Trade excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles” (53.5%).
The turnover of the trade sector was mainly concentrated (55.5%) in Wholesale Trade (2 109.3 million euros), with 34.7% (1 317.0 million euros) corresponding to the Retail subsector and 9.8% (370.9 million euros) to the Automobile trade subsector (including sales and maintenance).
The commercial margin obtained by Trade enterprises in 2023 amounted to 699.82 million euros (a 10.5% increase from 2022).
The number of enterprises in the trade sector accounted for 11.0% of the total non-financial enterprises operating in the Region (11.5% in 2022), which generated 38.8% of the total turnover of non-financial enterprises (41.6% in 2022). In terms of employees, this sector employed 14.6% of the employees in all non-financial enterprises (15.1% in 2022), and 84.5% of the commercial margin of these enterprises was generated by Trade sector enterprises (81.4% in 2022).
Compared to 2022, enterprises in the Trade sector showed increases of 10.5% in the Commercial Margin, 1.2% in turnover but a decrease of 1.7% in gross value added. Compensation of employees rose by 13.3% while the employees increased by 3.6% and the number of enterprises grew by 1.0%.
The turnover, employees, and number of enterprises in the Automobile trade activity increased by 26.1%, 4.5%, and 3.2%, respectively, compared to 2022.
The Wholesale Trade division recorded a 6.6% decrease in turnover, but a 4.8% increase in the number of enterprises and a 5.6% rise in the employees compared to 2022.
Retail Trade registered a 9.8% increase in turnover and a 2.4% rise in the employees, but the number of enterprises decreased by 1.6% compared to the previous year.
