Number of deaths increased by 4.9% compared with the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births declined by 19.2%
In June 2025, 194 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in June 2024 (an increase of 9 deaths; +4.9%). From January to June, a total of 1 478 deaths were registered, 204 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+16.0%).
The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths in the reference month (194) with the average for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019 (201 deaths on average), indicates a mortality deficit of 3.6%, reflecting the fact that, in most of those years, the number of deaths exceeded the level recorded in June 2025.
In June 2025, one death under the age of 1 year was registered, while no stillbirths were recorded.
Also in June 2025, 122 live births were registered, corresponding to a decrease of 19.2% compared with June 2024 (29 fewer live births). The total number of live births registered in the first six months of 2025 (794) was lower than that observed in the same period of 2024 by 7.4% (63 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 72 persons in June 2025, more adverse than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure stood at -34. In the first six months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance amounted to -684, representing a deterioration compared with the same period of 2024 (-417).
In the sixth month of 2025, 136 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 16.2% compared with June 2024 (19 more marriages). From January to June, a total of 524 marriages were registered, 37 more (+7.6%) than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
