There were 27 tropical nights at the Funchal/Lido station
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for July 2025, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard, which now includes data from the Selvagem Grande station. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Air Temperature
In July 2025, the highest average air temperature (23.8 °C) was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station, while the lowest average temperature was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (17.1 °C).
Compared to the climatological normals2 for July, all stations for which this information was available (7 stations) showed higher values, with Chão do Areeiro and Santo da Serra standing out with +2.5 °C deviation from its normal temperature.
Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in July, the highest extreme was observed at the Quinta Grande station (31.9 °C on the 18th). The lowest extreme was recorded at Pico do Areeiro (6.5 °C on the 2nd). Lugar de Baixo station recorded 29 days this month with maximum temperatures above 25 ºC, when the normal value for this station is 14.9 days. Furthermore, at the Funchal/Lido station, there were 27 tropical nights, meaning nights in which the minimum temperature did not drop below 20°C.
Precipitation
In July 2025, the highest monthly total precipitation was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (47.4 mm). However, the maximum value of daily precipitation (10.9 mm) was observed on the 8th at Santana. In turn, the Lugar de Baixo station recorded the lowest monthly value (0.1 mm).
Compared to the 1961-1990 climatological normal for July, most stations recorded higher monthly totals, with Santo da Serra standing out with a positive anomaly of 23.8 mm. On the other hand, the Funchal/Observatory, Lugar de Baixo, and Santa Catarina/Aeroporto stations recorded negative anomalies of 2.4 mm, 2.0 mm, and 0.1 mm, respectively.
Analysing the days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), it was found that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) and rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (22 days and 10 days, respectively). Only one very rainy day (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded in Chão do Areeiro, Santana, and Quinta Grande.
Relative Humidity
In July 2025, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 41% at Pico do Areeiro to 93% in Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (2%) was recorded at the Quinta Grande station on the 17th, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at 9 stations, on different days of the month.
Wind
In July 2025, among stations with an anemometer, the Ponta de São Lourenço station recorded the highest average wind intensity (24.4 km/h), while the Monte station recorded the lowest average (3.0 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 26th in Pico Alto (100.0 km/h).
Sunshine Duration
The maximum and minimum sunshine duration in July were 254.6 hours in Santa Catarina/Aeroporto3, and 229.5 hours at the Funchal/Observatory, with the normal value for the latter station being 220.5 hours. Porto Santo showed 193.2 hours of sunshine, lower than normal (223.0 hours).
Seawater Temperature
In July, the average sea water temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 22.4 °C (+0.8 °C than the normal value for this month). The highest average was recorded on the 28th (23.3 °C) and the lowest (21.5 °C) on 12nd.

1 - Daily data and cumulative monthly values refer to observations taken between 09:00 on the previous day and 09:00 on the current day.
2 -The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the period 1961-1990 are applied.
3 - There are no normal values for insolation for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
