In 2020

Commercialisation of banana decreased by 2.0% compared to the previous year

According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA), 21,222.6 tonnes of bananas produced in Madeira were commercialised in 2020 (down by 426.9 tonnes from 2019, i.e. -2.0%).

Of that total, 85.1% was dispatched, mainly to Mainland Portugal (84.7% in 2019).

The overall decrease was determined by the drop in the commercialisation of class I and class II (-20.1% and -37.3% respectively). The extra category increased by 6.9%, a growth that was not large enough to offset the decline in the other two categories.

September was the month of 2020 in which the largest volume of marketed bananas (2 759.7 tonnes) was recorded and February the one with the lowest quantity of this product (1 038.0 tonnes).

January and March were the months with the highest year-on-year increase (+35.7% and +29.9%, respectively). October and November recorded the most significant monthly declines in banana commercialization (-19.1% and -17.0%, respectively).
