Statistical Literacy at the service of citizenship

One of the strategic goals of the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is to improve communication and to promote statistical literacy, in accordance with the General Guidelines of Official Statistics Activity (LGAEO) 2013-2017.

Thus, since 2013, DREM has been carrying out several initiatives aimed at contributing to the strengthening of reliability in official statistics and improving its use by society in general by:

• Enriching the statistical reports (Press releases, In Focus) and making them easier to understand to users;
• Promoting together with the Regional Directorate of Education (DRE) and the Observatory for the Educational System of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OSERAM) a seminar under the theme “The Statistical literacy at the service of Citizenship”, for the members of the Executive Councils of Schools and teachers of the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education. In this event there was a presentation of project ALEA-Local Action of Applied Statistics, which aims to provide a set of materials to support the teaching of statistics to both teachers and students of the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education, in a practical and playful way, using the new technologies. These support materials are logically in accordance with the current programs of the aforementioned levels of education and approach statistics as a science;
• Celebrating a protocol with the Regional Secretary of Education, through the Regional Directorate of Education (DRE) and the Observatory for the Educational System of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OSERAM), with the goal of promoting the development of statistical literacy to the school community;
• Carrying out dissemination/training sessions about several topics related to statistics and statistical information in some of the basic and secondary educational institutions of the Autonomous Region that requested these sessions;
• Launching a new website in September 2014, fully redesigned, and available both in Portuguese and English. The use of the social networks to disseminate statistical reports was also one of the measures taken by DREM to increase its presence in society and in media;
• Being present through its regional director at several workshops/seminars, some of which are documented below.
