Commercialisation of banana decreased by 4.8% compared to the previous year

According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA), 20.2 thousand tonnes of bananas produced in Madeira were commercialised in 202, down by 1.0 thousand tonnes from 2020, i.e. -4.8%.

Among the different classes of banana commercialised in 2021, class II was the only one with a growth this year when compared to 2020 (+3.8%), as the extra class and class I dropped by 5.0% and 7.7%, respectively.

Of that total of banana, 84.6% was dispatched, mainly to Mainland Portugal (85.1% in 2020). In turn, the extra category represented 80.2% of the total marketed (80.5% in 2020), reaching 16.2 thousand tonnes.

September was the month of 2021 in which the largest volume of marketed bananas was recorded (2.4 thousand tonnes), and February was the one with the lowest quantity of this product (885.4 tonnes).

November and April were the months with the highest year-on-year increase (+15.0% and +11.1%, respectively). On the other hand, January and July recorded the most significant year-on-year monthly declines in banana commercialisation (-17.8% and -15.9%,  in the same order).
