Commercialisation of banana increased by 12.6% over the previous year

According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA), 22.8 thousand tonnes of bananas produced in Madeira were commercialised in 2022, rising by 2.5 thousand tonnes from 2021, i.e. +12.6%.

It should be noted that this volume of marketed banana is the highest since 1999.

There was an increase in 2022 across all classes. Compared to the previous year, bananas from the extra class grew by 14.3%, class I by 8.0% and class II by 2.1%. It should be noted that the extra class of banana represented 81.4% of the total marketed (80.2% in the previous year), which is also an all-time high.

Of that total of banana, 85.0% was dispatched, mainly to Mainland Portugal (84.6% in 2021). In turn, the extra class represented 81.4% of the total marketed (80.2% in 2021), reaching 18.5 thousand tonnes.

September was the month of 2022 in which the largest volume of marketed bananas was recorded (2.6 thousand tonnes), and December was the one with the lowest volume of this product (1.1 thousand tonnes).

February and May were the months with the highest year-on-year increase (+42.0% and +33.8%, respectively). On the other hand, October was the only one with a year-on-year decline in banana commercialisation (-5.3%).
