Commercialisation of banana increased by 6.5% year-on-year

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA), in the first eight months of 2023, 16,002.5 tonnes of banana were sold in the first sale, up by 981.4 tonnes (6.5%) over the same period in 2022. Of this total, 84.6% was shipped (84.7% in the same period the previous year), with the mainland being the main destination.

The performance of different bananas classes varied during this period. Compared to the same period in 2022, extra class banana increased by 11.6%, while I and II classes banana saw reductions of 16.1% and 15.5%, respectively. It should be noted that 85.4% of the total sales during this period belonged to the extra class (81.6% in the same period the previous year).

In the reference time frame, August recorded the highest volume of banana commercialisation (2,761.5 tonnes). However, the most significant relative increase was observed in May (+17.3%), while February (-21.2%) and March (-5.4%) were the only months with year-on-year decreases.
