In the first eight months of 2024

Commercialisation of banana decreased by 1.5% year-on-year

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA), in the first eight months of 2024, 15,764.3 tonnes of bananas were commercialised, down by 238.2 tonnes (-1.5%) over the same period in 2023. Of this total, 83.0% was shipped (84.6% in the same period last year), with the Mainland as its main destination.

The evolution according to the classes was uneven. Compared to the same period in 2023, Class I bananas increased by 38.9%, while Class “Extra” and Class II bananas presented reductions of 5.7% and 5.0% respectively.

It should be noted that of the total bananas sold in this period, 81.8% belonged to the “Extra” Class (85.4% in the same period last year).

During the reference period, August was the month that recorded the highest volume of banana sales (2,709,1 tonnes), although it was February where the greatest relative increase was observed (+44.0%), and June with the sharpest decline (-26.1%).
