In the first half of 2026
Banana commercialisation decreased by 19.8% year-on-year
According to data provided by Gesba, Lda., in the first half of 2026, 7 862.9 tonnes of bananas were commercialised in the ARM, down by 1 938.0 tonnes over the same period of the previous year (-19.8%). As already mentioned in the previous release, this decline is essentially explained by unfavourable weather conditions (storms and average temperatures lower than in 2025), which affected the volume and quality of the bananas commercialised.
Of the total bananas sold, 75.7% were shipped out (79.9% in the first half of 2025), with mainland Portugal as the main destination.
In the first half of 2026, there was a year-on-year reduction in the commercialisation of extra class bananas (-23.2%) and first class bananas (-16.8%), contrasting with the growth recorded in the second class (+21.1%).
It should be noted that, in the half-year in question, extra class bananas represented 77.1% of the total bananas commercialised, compared with 80.5% in the same period of the previous year, corresponding to a reduction of 3.4 percentage points in their respective share.
It should be noted that, in the second quarter of 2026, the year-on-year reduction in bananas sold was 15.5%, a less pronounced decline than that observed in the first quarter of 2026 (-25.0%).
June was the month with the highest volume of banana commercialisation in the first half of 2026, totalling 1 811.6 tonnes. In turn, March, April and June were the months that recorded the smallest year-on-year decreases (-3.5%, -7.7% and -6.9%, respectively). On the other hand, January and February stood out for the sharpest declines in the marketing of this agricultural product, with reductions of 34.1% and 33.9%, respectively, compared with the same months of 2025.
