In 2024,

Foreign Direct Investment in the Region increased by 8.7% compared to 2023

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira released today information regarding Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This data originated from the Bank of Portugal (BdP).

The FDI data is presented by recipient NUTS 2 region and is segmented by enterprise headquarters (the location of the entity directly receiving FDI) and by establishment (which also includes the location of other relevant entities within the perimeter of FDI beneficiary enterprises). This segmentation forms the basis for the analysis below.

FDI in establishments in the Region reached 10.0 billion euros in 2024

In 2024, in establishments located in the ARM, the FDI value reached 10 046 million euros, reflecting a growth of 8.0% compared to 2023 (+5.3% at the national level) and accelerating from the previous year’s growth (+0.8%). As a result, FDI in the ARM returned to the 10 billion euros threshold, previously reached in 2020 and 2021.

When compared to other regions of the country, in 2024, the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a higher FDI value than the regions of Oeste e Vale do Tejo (4.2 billion euros), Península de Setúbal (5.0 billion euros) and Alentejo (7.3 billion euros). The lowest FDI value was recorded in the Autonomous Region of Azores (ARA), at approximately 565.3 million euros. The region that showed the highest FDI growth rate compared to 2023 was Alentejo (+15.2%), followed by the ARM, Algarve, and Oeste e Vale do Tejo, all with a growth rate of 8.0%. The lowest rates were recorded in Península de Setúbal (+2.1%) and Norte (+2.4%).

In terms of FDI concentration, it can be seen that the region that concentrated most of the FDI stock, in 2024, was Grande Lisboa, which accounted for more than half of the FDI carried out in Portugal (53.0%). This is followed, at a long distance, by Norte (17.3%), Algarve (9.7%) and Centro (6.4%). The ARM (5.0%) maintained its fifth position (compared to 2023), ahead of Alentejo (3.6%), Península de Setúbal (2.5%) and Oeste e Vale do Tejo (2.1%). The ARA concentrated only 0.3% of the country's FDI in 2024.
