In the 1^st quarter 2020

Balance between formed and dissolved corporations was positive (+84)

According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 1^st quarter of 2020, the number of formed corporations headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (244) was higher than the number of dissolved corporations (160), which resulted in a positive balance between the formation and dissolution of corporations (+84). Compared to the previous year, the number of formed corporations went down by 99 while the number of dissolved corporations decreased by 49.             

The balance in the three months of the quarter were uneven. While in January in February, the aggregate of balance between formed and dissolved corporations stood at +29 (116 formed and 87 dissolved) and +50 (86 formed and 36 dissolved), respectively, in March this indicator dropped to +5, as a result of a decrease in the number of formed corporations (42), due to the strict measures to contain the new coronavirus pandemic.

The data broken down by economic activity show that the most pronounced positive balance was observed in “Accommodation and food service activities” (+17), followed by “Other service activities” (+14), “Real estate activities” and “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (+10 in both activities), “Construction” (+8) and “Administrative and support service activities” (+6). Inversely, a negative balance was recorded in” Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (-3).

During the first three months of the year, the ratio between formed and dissolved corporations stood at 1.53, below national average (2.45).
