In the 1st quarter of 2022
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 12.2% year-on-year
In the first quarter of 2022, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, increased by 12.2% year-on-year. The limitation of some economic activities in the 1st quarter of 2021 due to the pandemic, explains this sharp change.
Breaking down the data by source issued in the period in question - which totalled around 219.5 Gigawatt hours (Gwh), it should be highlighted that, compared to the first quarter of 2021, the electricity generated by hydropower and photovoltaics decreased by 10.9% and 2.0%, respectively. This decline was compensated by the growth in production through other sources, mainly by wind power (+66.5%), urban solid waste (+18.5%) and thermal power (+7.6%). Consequently, the share of distributed energy using thermal sources went from 57.1% in the first quarter of 2021 to 54.7% in the reference period, which means that the production of renewable energy has increased to a share of 45.3% in the first quarter of 2022 (42.9% year-on-year).
It should also be mentioned the importance that natural gas continues to assume as a source for the production of electricity, representing 20.2% of the total production mix, with an increase of 22.3% year-on-year.
