Note: By mistake, in the release, the percentages of non-renewable and renewable sources in 2022 were exchanged being the correct figures 67.5% and 32.5%, respectively.
In 2022
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 5.9% compared to the prior year
In 2022, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), increased by 5.9% compared to the previous year.
Breaking down the production mix associated with the distribution of electricity, which was about 910.3 Gigawatt-hours (Gwh), the electricity generated by hydropower, wind power, thermal and solid waste power increased by 3.4%, 5.2%, 6.0% and 19.1%, respectively. Inversely, there was a slight decline in production through photovoltaic sources (-0.4%). The distribution of the production mix between non-renewable and renewable sources remained almost unchanged compared to the previous year, with a share of 67.5% and 32.5%, respectively.
The production of electricity using thermal natural gas remains relevant, representing 13.8% of the total production mix (22.0% in 2021), although recording a 33.6% decrease in electricity production from this source.
It is worth noting that the value of energy distribution is the highest since 2012, with the electric energy from wind source reaching an all-time high in the year 2022.
Finally, it should be highlighted that the distribution of electricity increased by 0.3% in the 4th quarter of 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, maintaining the deceleration trend of the two previous quarters.
