In the first nine months of 2024
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 1.9% compared to the same period the previous year
The electricity production, estimated from the energy distribution data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), grew by 1.9% in the first nine months of 2024, year-on-year.
An analysis of the composition of electrical energy for the period, which amounted to approximately 708.6 Gigawatt hours (GWh), shows a higher contribution from wind power (+35.2%), urban solid waste (+7.5%), and photovoltaic energy sources (+6.1%) compared to the period from January to September 2023. Conversely, there was a reduction in hydroelectric (-11.3%) and thermal energy sources(-3.3%). The share of total electricity production from thermal sources decreased from 70.7% to 67.1% between the first nine months of 2023 and the same period in 2024, indicating an increase in the share of renewables to 32.9% (up from 29.3% during the first nine months of 2023).
Noteworthy is the increased prominence of natural gas as an energy source for electricity production, accounting for 16.4% of the total (12.1% in the same period of 2023), although electricity production from this source declined by 3.3% year-on-year.
Focusing on the third quarter of 2024, electricity production amounted to 252.2 GWh, representing a 1.6% year-on-year increase.
